The Active After-school Communities (AASC) program is a major component of the Australian Government's Building a Healthy, Active Australia package aimed at tackling the growing problem of declining physical activity and poor eating habits of Australian children.
AASC is an after school hours structured physical activity and health program that will be delivered nationally to children enrolled in Australian primary schools and Childcare Benefit approved Out of School Hour Care Services (OSHCS).
Sporting organisations, sporting clubs local community organisations and private providers of sports programs are invited to deliver quality junior sport programs as part of the AASC program in the after school hours time slot between 3.00 and 5.30pm.
In addition to the AASC program the Building a Healthy, Active Australia package also includes:
- Active School Curriculum - New conditions of funding to support the delivery of at least 2hrs of physical activity per week for children in primary school and junior high school.
- Healthy School Communities - Grants to community organisations linked with schools, such as Parents and Citizens Associations, to promote healthy eating.
- Healthy Eating and Regular Physical Activity - Practical help and information for Australian families about how to make healthy eating and physical activity part of their everyday lives.
